June 2026: Training, Health, and Looking Ahead

As we move into June, I wanted to sit down and reflect on the last 3 months of my training and health. It’s been a period of finding my footing again, and I want to share where I’m at before looking ahead to what’s next.

Training Summary

For the past three months, my main focus has been trying to find a steady rhythm again. Rather than stressing over daily volume, I’ve prioritized consistent, quality work.

  • Total Workouts: 27
  • Total Duration: 46.5 hours (~1h 43m per session)
  • Total Distance: 319.6 km
  • Total TSS: 2196

I’ve settled into a nice rhythm of getting out on the bike roughly every 3-4 days. It’s not daily, but when I do train, the sessions feel meaningful—averaging over an hour and a half with a decent amount of effort (~81 TSS per workout). This consistency has been exactly what I needed to build a solid foundation without pushing myself into burnout.

Looking at my health metrics over this time has been pretty eye-opening, especially when it comes to recovery.

  • Sleep: Averaging about 7 hours, but with significant variability. There were several concerning nights of very short sleep (under 5 hours) that need addressing.
  • HRV & Resting Heart Rate: While averages remain healthy (HRV 47.3, RHR 60.1 bpm), there were distinct periods indicating high physiological stress. Notably, significant dips in HRV corresponded with spikes in RHR, suggesting inadequate recovery, high stress, or potential illness during those windows.
  • Weight: Remained stable around 75 kg, though data tracking was sparse.

Moving forward, I realize that taking better care of my sleep and being more diligent with tracking is going to be just as important as the actual time I spend training.

Upcoming Race & Future Plans

Coming up this week is this year’s edition of Vätternrundan, a classic 315 km cycling race around lake Vättern in Sweden. I have done the event the last two years, making this my 3rd year in a row. Due to my recent health issues, my training for this year’s event has been extremely lacking. Because of this, my primary goal is simply to get through the race feeling okay. However, I am happy that I will be riding together with my wife and father again this year, making even a slower finishing time an enjoyable experience.

The health setbacks over the past year have also derailed my original timeline for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships 2027, and I’ve had to come to terms with a longer roadmap to be able to compete at that level.

After this year’s Vätternrundan, I will sit down and make a more detailed plan for the coming years. I believe in having set goals for myself, both as a way to stay motivated and to provide structure and direction to my training.
